  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)
  • 14 ounces unwrapped caramels
  • 5 ounces evaporated milk
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  3. In a mixing bowl, cream together softened butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well; stir in vanilla.
  4. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Gently fold in chocolate chips. Spread half of the dough into the prepared pan and bake for about 10 minutes until just set.
  6. While baking, melt caramels with evaporated milk over low heat until smooth.
  7. Pour melted caramel over baked base and dollop remaining dough on top before returning to the oven.
  8. Bake for another 10–15 minutes until edges are golden brown and center is set.
  9. Cool completely before slicing into squares.
